S.2 E.10 - Things to Know Before Buying a Pet

According to the 2019-2020 APPA National Pet Owners Survey, 67 percent of U.S. households own a pet and the numbers are only rising due to the surge in pet adoptions during the COVID-19 pandemic which has people spending more time at home.

There are many benefits of owning a pet. Forbes reported that owning an animal can, “increase opportunities to exercise, get outside, and socialize. Regular walking or playing with pets can decrease blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and triglyceride levels. and Pets can help manage loneliness and depression by giving us companionship.” I've noticed first hand at the benefit of simply teaching responsibility to my son who has kept a pet fish alive for over a year.

So with the rise of pet ownership, and in celebration of National Pet Day, what should we know and consider before buying a pet? Well, today we have with us Deann Shepherd from the Humane Society of Utah to help us walk through what we need to know before buying a pet.

Although he was referring to dogs, as American photographer Roger Caras (car-as) said "they are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole."
